When looking for the perfect car, the first thing we should do is check the VIN at DAF. This activity will allow us to discover a lot of important information. Often it turns out that contrary to what the seller assures us, the car was involved in an accident or had the meter turned. Therefore, before buying a vehicle, it is worth asking for the VIN number.

Checking the VIN at DAF allows you to find out about the vehicle’s history. In addition to the obvious information such as year of manufacture or make and model, we can also find out about the place of origin, equipment, colour, accident history and original mileage. Contrary to what many people may think, this information is not very important, but it does affect the further use of the vehicle. If your vehicle was originally silver and is now black, you may be wondering why. It could be that the paint has peeled off, which of course does not affect the continued use of the vehicle. However, it could be that the car has been involved in a serious accident, after which it was necessary to rebuild the rest of the car.

It’s worth deciphering the VIN before you buy the vehicle to make sure you’re actually paying for what you’re buying. Unfortunately, it may turn out that the new equipment adversely affects the vehicle and that more frequent visits to the showroom will be necessary. By checking the VIN we are also able to determine whether the vehicle has accidentally entered the country illegally.

DAF – how did the brand come about? DAF history

Dutch concern founded in 1928 by Huub van Doorne. The company headquarters is located in Eindhoven. DAF is famous for its truck production, but it has also produced cars, vans and buses. Check out the history of the DAF brand.

On 1st April 1928 Huub van Doorne founded Commanditaire Vennootschap Huub van Doorne’s Machinefabriek. Co-founder of this workshop, Huenges was the brewery manager. Huub van Doorne repaired his car a few times and he was so impressed with the quality of the service that he offered to lend him money to open the workshop. After the Second World War, luxury cars and trucks were rare, which was a great opportunity for DAF. In 1949 trailer, truck and bus production began. In February 1958 the first car was finally officially presented ready for sale – the reaction was surprising – 4000 units were ordered and on 23 March the first two cars rolled off the production line. Due to the low profitability of production, the concern sold its passenger car division to the Swedish company Volvo.

From 1976 only commercial vehicles were manufactured under the DAF brand. In 1987 DAF merged with Leyland Trucks (part of the MG Rover Group). Since that year it has also been listed on the Dutch stock exchange as DAF NV. The new company, sold its vehicles under the name Leyland DAF in the UK and everywhere else under the name DAF. In 1988 two trucks took part in the Dakar Rally. Kees Van Loevestijn, the driver of one of them, was killed in an accident that killed two people in addition to him. DAF withdrew from the rally. In 1993 DAF NV went bankrupt, resulting in the creation of three companies through a management buyout: LDV Limited, a Birmingham-based van manufacturer, Leyland Trucks, based in Leyland, and DAF Trucks. On 15 November 1996, the PACCAR group bought out DAF Trucks.
